Designing to Mitigate Flood Damage to Residential and Commercial Structures

Level: Introductory
Format: Text-based

Description:

Floods are currently the most common and costly of all-natural disasters in the US and they continue to increase in frequency, severity, location, and cost. This infers that designers should heighten their awareness of the level of flood risk, create site plans that mitigate any flood impact, and, as well, design resilient structures that can withstand flooding with minimal or no flood damage. Drawing extensively from FEMA experience and research, this course discusses how flood risk is established, how communities can be planned to mitigate flood impacts, and how designers can design, detail, and construct residential and commercial structures to mitigate flood damage.
